MLive's Michigan Coney Dog Project came to Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor on Wednesday as part of its quest to find the state's best coney island hot dogs. AnnArbor.com produced these videos of the local visits by John "Gonzo" Gonzalez, who is leading the charge.

Based on votes in an online poll, the local nominees were Bill's Drive In in Ypsilanti and Mark's Midtown Coney Island in Ann Arbor. Here's Gonzo at Bill's:

And here's the visit to Mark's:

Follow further developments on Gonzo's blog, and watch for the winning dog to be crowned on Tuesday.

My favorite coney is at the Alpha Coney Isand over in Oak Valley by Target, but that first video makes me want to head over to Bill's this weekend for some home-made root beer! Reminds me of the old Dog 'n Suds.

This guy has an amazing coney blog, with years of reviews and info. He has even created maps that detail how the dogs are topped in different regions of the country. His work could be cited in a scholarly paper on coney dogs. He advocates coleslaw on a coney, as is the style in his region. I've made them that way, and it is an excellent variation. http://wvhotdogblog.blogspot.com/

How can this even be a contest w/o going to American or Lafayette in Detroit?
