Zingerman's Reuben makes Food & Wine's list of best sandwiches in America

By Jessica Webster

Zingerman's Reuben has made Food & Wine's list of the best sandwiches in the U.S.

Mary Bilyeu, Contributor

Not convinced yet that you live in one of the best little cities in the country? Convinced that we are, in fact, overrated? Well here's more fuel for the fire: Food & Wine has created a list of the best sandwiches in the U.S., and Zingerman's Deli's Reuben made the cut.

The list of sandwiches runs 20 deep, and ranges from "pulled squash" sandwiches in Charleston, South Carolina to an albacore tuna melt in Portland, Oregon. The Zingerman's entry references Oprah Winfrey's love for Zingerman's sandwiches (she's also a fan of their Zzang! bars), the locally sourced meat and in-house bread and dressing.

Surprisingly (or not, depending on your perspective), New York delis like Katz's, The Carnegie Deli and the Stage Deli didn't get a mention on Food & Wine's list.

Can I take a Zingerman's reuben down to Dominicks and wash it down with sangria?

The Zingerman's Reubens have quite a bit less meat on them than they once did. These days, the meat is probably weighed on a scale. Back in the day, it was probably a judgement call by the person putting it together. I wonder when that change happened?

Back in the 80's for one guy to start a phenomenal place and do phenomenal things for the community all great and dandy. It's almost a conflict $20.00 almost for a sandwich when you can have the same corn beef and breads at The Bread Box and it's loaded with twice the meat at @$7.99=9.99.Yet they do so much for the community its so contradictory how can a single parent of many children afford $20,00 mac and cheese at the road house? How can someone that works hard afford a $20.00 sandwich it makes no sense it is about reasonably priced for all so that alienated the others from going through the doors. How many people have lost their jobs and can afford to buy a $20.00 sandwich , Your right people the meat is less. There should be a deli where everyone can afford to take their families and enjoy a meal.

Zingerman's Reuben is the best Reuben at all. But recently I fell there is less corn beef in the sandwich. Even the large size it is not what used to be. I love their bread they are the very best.

It is true. It has downsized.

How to eat a Zingermans Rueben ------ get some fruit, veggies, h20 and maybe some coleslaw --buy Rueben and split it with a friend. The sandwich is the best I've ever had but is too expensive so I just split it with someone else.

Food and Wine also named Mani as one of the best pizza places in the US... not sure I trust their judgment. Mani has been hit or miss lately and only seems to be getting worse; both are extremely overpriced and overrated. Maybe that should be the new "Food & Wine" list.

The only ones on this list that are more expensive are in NYC and Boston (lobster roll). You can get 3 subways for the same money

Z's sandwiches used to be so large that even a gourmand like me couldn't fit it in my mouth. Now even the "large" sandwich is thinner than the former 1/2 size sandwich was. I used to be able to accept the price because the sandwich was so oversized, but now that even the full size sandwich is actually on the small size, I rarely freqequent Zingy's. Although, it apparently doesn't stop others, based on the lines I see at the deli.

That is all fine and dandy whoo who! Let's go back to 1984-85 when there were 4 tables and Townie's stated oh this will never make it .I stood behind them this long. I had been going to Ben and George's since a small child so I knew what a deli was . I would like to see Paul and Ari there more often or train there staff with more customer service skills and quit the snob tude .Do you know how many people I meet in a day that say wow your not like the rest|?? I ask what does that mean?People that come from out of town think very badly of us Ann Arborites and I want Paul and Ari to remember where they started all the negativity Ann Arbor dealt them back in the 80's and thank those who stood by them . When you make mistakes fix them genially not snobbish like someone wants a hand out . Treat all with kindness , a smile that doesn't cost anything that's free and that is called customer service when Ari stood behind the slicer and made your sandwich for you! Congratulations but remember where you started the flack you got 4 tables inside the deli and you always had a smile be thankful for those of us that stood and frequented your establishment and passed the word along you had a ruff start Ari.

Ari is *literally* there every time I am at any Zingerman's location. Bakehouse, Roadhouse, Deli, Next Door. I think he's cloned himself.

I go occasionally to Z's, and though I am not a big fan of them due to their prices, I have always had pleasant, even if not always competent, service.

I went to another Deli in Ypsi and got what they call a corned beef slider. The corned beef was very fat and had a line of gristle in it that I couldn't bite through. I have had many more Zings Reuben's and never had a bad slice of corned beef. This is why I stick with Zings. Made a mistake, went with the low priced alternative and got burned.

The Reuben is amazing. I remember when I first had one in 1987. I think it was $6. I remember thinking "$6 for a sandwich? Are you kidding?" I prefer the complexity of the pastrami version. And ordering it with half pumpernickle and half rye is sublime. Those great ingredients come at a price. Every one of them is critical to the sandwich and the end result. You cannot duplicate that sandwich with lesser ingredients.

I love Zingerman's, but the best corned beef in the area is at Star Deli on Twelve & Telegraph. Zingerman's Sour Cream Coffee Cake makes up for the difference, though.

I have had sandwiches from a GAS STATION, that have tasted better than the infamous $15 Zingy Sammy. Zingerman's is beyond overrated.

I'm not sure if it's Zingerman's being overrated as much as your taste buds being under qualified.

A sandwich shouldn't be over ten bucks. Star Deli and Steve's Deli have Reubens on par, if not bettter, and you can get it for less than a Hamilton.

C.C. Ingersoll, it isn't always the case that you get what you pay for when you "buy the best." Zingerman's bagels are both expensive and horrible--among the worst non-supermarket bagels I've ever eaten. Zingerman's has some great food, but I agree with treetowncartel--the sandwich is just too expensive. And frankly, any list of best sandwiches in the US that doesn't include a sandwich from Katz's is fatally flawed. Food & Wine is a snob publication, and I think their choices probably had to do with high prices (which they would see as a plus) and celebrity endorsements. If Oprah can still be considered a celebrity.

70%? would you happen to have that breakdown?

C.C. Ingersoll

Mon, Sep 17, 2012 : 10:08 p.m.

70% of the price of Zingerman's sandwiches is the actual raw product cost -- not including labor, rent and electric. You get what you pay for when you buy the best.

I figured an Oprah sandwich would have lot's of Onions and Horseradish that make you cry, just like Oprah does! " The Zingerman's entry references Oprah Winfrey's love for Zingerman's sandwiches (she's also a fan of their Zzang! bars), the locally sourced meat and in-house bread and dressing."

I recommend Conor O'Neill's turkey Reuben, especailly for people who'd rather not eat beef. I prefer to leave the mayo off mine (there's already some in the cole slaw in the sandwich). I prefer the atmosphere at "Conor's" and it's also local. It's definitely not a chain. The owner has two locations: one in Ann Arbor and one in Boulder, Colorado.

"Surprisingly (or not, depending on your perspective), New York delis like Katz's, The Carnegie Deli and the Stage Deli didn't get a mention on Food & Wine's list." Considering what Zingerman's gets for a sandwich, it ought to be the "best" - whatever that means... or maybe those other folks don't buy as much advertising space in Food & Wine as Zingerman's does. There are lots of really good Ruebens out there. And of course, Oprah is the "ultimate" authority on all things foodie. Riiiighhhht. Besides, everyone knows that A2 is now just a distant suburb of NYC, anyway.

Zingerman's Reuben? Oh yeah! But won't this cause Z's to boost the price (for a sandwich) to over the current $15 / each? Come on, let's get some perspective here.! To tell the truth, I get a hankering for a Zingerman's Reuben fairly often. To avoid bankruptcy, I often resort to making my own (for less than half Z's price). Without this safety net, I'd be the first person in America to go into bankruptcy due to a mere sandwich. ;-)

djacks24

Tue, Sep 18, 2012 : 2:13 p.m.

I can get a turkey Rueben at the Coney Island for a fraction of the price. It may not taste as good, but I'll take a fatter wallet any day.

If they claim to have found the 20 best sandwiches, it stands to reason that they also found the 20 worst. So where is that list? So, no, they did not really taste tens of thousands of sandwiches. This is just another "best of" list that's a snap to put together and gets gullible publications to link to it. Please stop with these lists! Anyone else think it smacks of insecurity?

Tru2Blu76

Mon, Sep 17, 2012 : 8:22 p.m.

It may or may not "smack of insecurity" -- but it sure does confirm that everyone involved in this continual list-making plans to make some money from it. :-)
