Free seminar about establishing a career in film and video production at EMU
If you've ever wondered how to get your foot in the door of the film industry, you can find out at a free 3-hour seminar on Saturday, March 27 at Eastern Michigan University.
Transmedia pioneer and acclaimed Michigan storyteller Harvey Ovshinsky will present a talk titled “How to produce a career in film and video production” twice that day, at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Quirk Theater building. Participants must register, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Beginners are welcome, and even industry professionals looking for a mid-career boost can benefit from the seminar, which will focus on the entrepreneurial side of film and video production. Ovshinsky will share real-world examples and personal stories about how to start out, grow, and sustain a career in Michigan’s burgeoning-yet-tenuous production environment.
Sub-topics will include, “How do you make work when you can’t find any?”; “Plan C: Should I stay in Michigan or should I go?”; and “The 10 best mistakes I ever made and what I learned from them.” Described by The Detroit News as “one of this country’s finest storytellers,” Harvey Ovshinsky is president of HKO Media, an Ann Arbor-based production and story consulting company. He is a former producer for ABC and Post Newsweek stations in Detroit and former director of production at Detroit Public Television. His documentaries have been awarded broadcasting’s highest honors, including an Emmy, a Peabody, a DuPont-Columbia University Award, and the American Film Institute’s Robert M. Bennett Award for Excellence. In 2004, the Detroit Docs International Film Festival honored Ovshinsky with its first ever Career Achievement award.
