Not so fast, Two Cents -- "verbal" means using words. Spoken verbal or written verbal makes no difference. My heavy-handed satire was meant to remind the writer that the proper word in this context is "oral" -- not "verbal."

You might also explain what other kind of appraisal there could be than a verbal one -- i.e., using words. Would they perhaps draw little cartoon pictures to suggest the item's value? Or better yet, perform charades, with a sign-language interpreter standing by?

The obvious 'other kind of appraisal' referred to in the article would be a written one -- i.e., using written words rather than simply spoken words. I'm assuming that the appraisals provided at this event will be more for informational purposes only and not for use to document the value of an item for insurance or resale.
