Get ready to get bloody as the Dexter Community Players bring 'Evil Dead: The Musical' to the stage

“Evil Dead”—the original horror movie featuring demons, boomsticks, the Necronomican and numerous Michigan connections—has been turned into “Evil Dead: The Musical.” And thanks to the Dexter Community Players, you’ll get a chance to not only see it, but also get soaked in blood at it.

While the story of teenagers unleashing deadly demons in a secluded cabin remains the same, much of the tone is different. Of course, when you add song and dance numbers, that’s bound to happen. “As musical mayhem descends upon this sleepover in the woods, "camp" takes on a whole new meaning,” according to a press release.

In this case, mayhem can be messy. The theater is selling $15 general admission tickets or $17 “Splatter Zone” tickets.

“The blood of the innocent often rains down on the Splatter Zone throughout this hilarious musical. For those of you just tuning in, this means you will get blood on you during the performance,” according to the website. “Some of you will be covered from head to toe, while others will only have a few splashes on them.”

While there are non-splatter areas, there are no guarantees that you will walk out without blood on your hands…or face…or anywhere, really.

However, the blood is a mix of “fabric softener and other safe non-toxic ingredients” that will “more than likely” wash out in the laundry. But Splatter Zone Survivor t-shirts will be available for purchase for those who enjoy that kind of thing or just need to replace a piece of their wardrobe.

The original “Evil Dead” movies starred Bruce Campbell and was directed by Sam Raimi who would go on to direct the Spider-Man movies. Both they and producer Rob Tapert grew up in Michigan. Portions of the movie were filmed in the state.

The performances for “Evil Dead: The Musical” are scheduled for Oct. 21-21 and 28-30. There will be two performances on certain Fridays and Saturdays. Please note, there is strong language in the show, so those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Jason Smith directs, while Jonathan Sills is the musical director. The performances will be held in the Copeland Auditorium, 7720 Ann Arbor St., Dexter. This is the first time the show will be performed in Washtenaw County.

An Evil Dead Zombie Prom is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Connor O’Neills in Ann Arbor from 10 p.m. to close. Those dressed in prom attire have the chance to win tickets to the show.
