Verbinski's big-screen 'Lone Ranger' all about Tonto; Kanye's new video; Broadway 'Spiderman' delayed again; and more

Don’t be misled by the title.

Gore Verbinski’s upcoming, big screen version of “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp as Tonto, is heavily inspired by Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” instead of the old radio and tv shows about the masked crusader, and focuses on sidekick Tonto instead of, well, the Lone Ranger.

Just so we're all clear on that.

MORE MOVIES

* Lindsay Lohan wants to take a break from (allegedly) shoplifting jewelry to be in a film called “Escaping the Game,” in which she would play an investigator looking into the disappearances of various celebrities.

* A campaign to save Michigan’s film tax breaks - which Governor Rick Snyder’s budget proposes to eliminate - is underway.

GeraldFord_Football.jpg
* The newest, long-term project from local documentary filmmakers Brian Kruger and Buddy Moorehouse (“The Girl in Center Field”) is “Victors,” a 10 part series dedicated to the history of Michigan football.

The first volume in the series is slated for a May release and focuses on the controversy surrounding a 1934 game between U-M and Georgia Tech. The Wolverines decided to bench their lone African American player, Willis Ward, to comply with their Southern guests’ Jim Crow laws, and this caused a stir on campus and a personal crisis for Ward’s roommate, Gerald Ford.

* A Hollywood make-up artist is suing the producer of the “American Pie” franchise over the hostile work environment involved in the 2008 Michigan shoot of the film “Demoted.”

MUSIC

* While a former music exec is very publicly grousing over Justin Bieber and Eminem’s Grammy snubs, the Biebster got a haircut yesterday. Nooooooooooooooo!

* Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone an advance preview of a handful of songs from her upcoming album “Born This Way.”

* Not exactly high on my list of concerns this week, but there’s a small dust-up regarding whether or not Kanye West, in his brand new video for “All of the Lights,” ripped off a French film thriller called “Enter the Void.” Here’s the video, as well as the trailer for “Void,” so you can see the homage, or stealing, for yourself.

* At a recent Lisbon concert, Katy Perry offered acoustic versions of Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World,” Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin’,” and Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair.” Plus, a dedazzled flute is delivered to her on a velvet pillow during the medley. Classy!

* Detroit News columnist Daniel Howes offers his perspective regarding the ongoing DSO strike.

TELEVISION

* “Glee” star Matthew Morrison was recently spotted making out with Olivia Munn (“Perfect Couples” and “The Daily Show”) at a New York Rangers game. I’ll pass you a note during recess with any updates.

Minnie_Driver.jpg
* This fall, Minnie Driver will star in a CBS drama called “Hail Mary,” about a suburban single mom who teams up with a hustler to solve crimes. Well, of course she does.

* Aretha Franklin plans to talk to syndicated talk show host Wendy Williams, marking the Queen of Soul’s first on-camera interview since undergoing surgery late last year.

* Following “Firefly” star Nathan Fillion saying, earlier this week, that if he won $300 million from the California lottery, he’d buy “Firefly,” make it on his own, and distribute it online, fans are now rallying behind this idea. Come on, people. For the price of a cup of coffee a day …

THEATER

* Stars of the new Broadway musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” are teaming up with the It Gets Better Project to produce its first public service announcement. Check out the PSA here.

spiderman.jpg
* Is this even news anymore? The producers of “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark” have hired a consultant to improve performance, vocal and orchestration arrangements, and sound quality of the numbers; and - wait for it - it looks like the show’s “official” opening, currently set for March 15, will be delayed a 6th time.

BOOKS

* The New York Times, in the past few days, has offered two reviews of a book (one by Michiko Kakutani, another by Johah Lehrer) sure to generate discussion: Sherry Turkle’s “Alone Together,” which focuses on how technology is changing how we relate to each other and construct our inner lives. Wait until I post something about that to my 400 friends on Facebook.
