Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey releases "One Day in Brooklyn," plays one night in Ann Arbor
Tulsa-based group Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's rollicking mix of jazz, funk and rock has as much appeal for jam band fans as avant jazz enthusiasts. Pianist Brian Haas and drummer Josh Raymer — the joke is that there's no Jacob Fred — have helmed the electric Miles-meets-Jimi Hendrix sound since 1994.
"One Day in Brooklyn," released earlier this month, finds JFJO reinterpreting others' music and penning some originals, with one more twist: the addition of a lap steel guitarist and upright bassist. LA Weekly says of the EP, "They do Monk (a gorgeous “Four in One”), Abdullah Ibrahim, Roland Kirk (a crazier “Black & Crazy Blues” that weaves and darts and cooks), and some Beatles. Their own “Country Girl” is just lovely, a little off the track, languid here, hurried there....Recommended."
Tune in to a JFJO MP3 jukebox:
Hear what the buzz is all about as the recently-expanded outfit open for bassist Mike Gordon at the Blind Pig on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
And what's ahead after the tour? A reinterpretation of Beethoven's 3rd and 6th symphonies. Seriously.
