'Jeopardy!' references Ann Arbor eatery Afternoon Delight

By Jenn McKee

Locals may have done a double-take while watching Wednesday's edition of "Jeopardy!", since an Ann Arbor restaurant got a shout-out.

During the show, one revealed clue read, "An Ann Arbor cafe that's big on lunch shares its name with this song that had "Skyrockets in Flight" - leading, of course, to the question, "What is Afternoon Delight?"

We can now all claim one degree of Alex Trebek.

Tom has always done a great job with AD.

I was watching Good Morning America one day last week and during the weather part where all the people stand outside like morons and wave, there was a woman with a sign that read, "Ann Arbor M." That was great. Now we're all two degrees of Robin Roberts (two degrees because she was off that day).

I just picked up lunch from AD a while ago and asked owner Tom Hackett, who was working the register, if he saw last night's "Jeopardy." He said no, but that he got lots of emails and phone calls immediately after the clue appeared on the show. And yes, he was pleased. :)

@ Joe Hood, it sure is. While many of us are willing to walk more than a few steps to get lunch on some days, Afternoon Delight and Jerusalem Garden are staples here.

If you've never eaten there you are missing out. Lots of tasty and healthy choices served up by the nicest restaurant owner in town!

I'm ashamed that in all the years I lived near downtown, I've never eaten at AD. Never even heard of it. And I was completely stumped on the question. Though I did know Lewis Carroll was the mathematician/author in FJ. Yeah, good for me. I think I'm going to set a record for most annual Jeopardy tests taken falling a couple of questions short of qualifying.

Isn't that the favorite lunch time restaurant for the crew at annarbor.com?

Hmm

I live in Ann Arbor, watch Jeopardy all the time, and I would probably have missed this question lol

It was something where every answer contained a reference to a time of day. "Evening Gown" was the first answer.

That would put my guess out of contention. I was going for "Big 10 Breakfast Joints to Nurse a Hangover."

Yes, in what category did this response appear? I have ALWAYS associated the name of the eatery with the name of the song. Is there any word on how the eatery's original owners selected the name (i.e. song or something else)?

One has to wonder if they just searched for any restaurant named Afternoon Delight, or of our specific one actually has a wider following. I guess I grew up in Ann Arbor and I always appreciated Afternoon Delight, but I never knew it was known outside of the immediate area.

It's been around since the early '70's. So, figure how many people have been around Ann Arbor, that are no longer in Ann Arbor, that enjoyed Afternoon Delight. I think maybe, just maybe, word has spread.

Hmm

Thu, Apr 11, 2013 : 6:15 p.m.

Exactly. AD is not like Zings or something I wouldn't expect many people outside of this immediate area to know about them. I'm sure the owner was happy for the reference!

I have never associated the restaurant with that song, until now. Thanks so very much, Mr. Trebek. Just the thought of those singers "doing it" in the afternoon gives me the creeps...

@Arth- All I'm saying is, even by 1976 standards, The Starland Vocal Band scores above average in schlockiness. Muskrat Love doesn't bother me, but this....

I read that last bit as as "gives me the crepes". Appropriate? I think so.
