Kevin's Clips: The Rationals - "Leavin' Here"

By Kevin Ransom

In September, when I wrote a story about The Rationals — the seminal, '60s-era Ann Arbor rocking-soul band that broke up in 1970 — I interviewed Scott Morgan, the band's former lead singer and a stalwart of the Ann Arbor/Detroit music scene for the last 40-some years. That story focused in part on the summer release of "Think Rational!" — the band's first-ever anthology, which pulled together all of their classic singles of the mid-'60s, and added many previously-unreleased tracks.

In September, Morgan said that, given all of the attention the band received due to the anthology's release, he wanted to do more shows that focused exclusively on the Rationals' songbook. Well, it didn't take long for that to happen: The show at the Blind Pig tonight is being billed as "Scott Morgan Plays the Music of the Rationals."

So it's a fairly safe bet that, at the Pig gig, he and his band will be tearing it up on this iconic '60s rocking-soul nugget, "Leavin' Here," one of their big singles. This classic was a Holland/Dozier/Holland composition — but, as with many of their soul covers, the Rationals scuffed it up and delivered it with a scrappy garage-rock urgency, and even borrowed a few lines from Marvin Gaye's "Baby Don't You Do It" and dropped them into the middle section.

Morgan's band at the Pig show will include Jeremy Wheeler of The Bang!, Chris "Box" Taylor of Powertrane, Eddie Baranek of The Sights, Dave Shettler of SSM, and Jim Diamond of Ghetto Recorders.

Here's hoping that, in the months ahead, Morgan does more shows around town that spotlight the Rationals' groundbreaking music.
