Musician and University of Michigan student Laurel Premo marks the release of her second CD, "Stung by the Nettle," with a concert on Thursday at Canterbury House. Music starts at 8 p.m. and admission is a mere $3.

Ever the musical traveler, Premo explores Appalachian, Celtic and Scandinavian sounds on "Stung," spinning tales of what she describes as "myths of Greece, ballads of plague, screamings of the heart and shouts for the love of life."

Joining in the festivities are guest artists Theo Katzman, who local music fans may recognize as singer and multi-instrumentalist of My Dear Disco; Andrew Kratzat, a local bassist now playing with artists on the rise Jesse Palter and the Hot Club of Detroit; and Kalamazoo-based folk-bluegrass purveyor Michael Beauchamp. Premo and Beauchamp also collaborate as the old-time folk-influenced Red Tail Ring and performed locally just last week. Listen to Laurel Premo "Nine a' may" (MP3).

Aside from her musical pursuits, Premo is a multifaceted scholar. Last fall, she studied Finnish traditional music in Helsinki at the Sibelius Academy's department of folk music, and in contrast to her music that hearkens to earlier times, at U-M she works with digital audio in recording and composition in the Performing Arts Technology department.
