Library unearths Ann Arbor News movie spoof from 1936

By AnnArbor.com Staff

When the Ann Arbor News' archives were donated to the Ann Arbor District Library after the paper stopped operations, who knew anything like this was hiding there?

The library has posted an item on its website about a 16mm silent movie produced by the News' advertising department in 1936. The library has posted digital video of the movie, 21 minutes long and called "The Back Page," surely a wink at the still-famous 1931 newspaper movie "The Front Page."

The houses were right across Huron Street from the Ann Arbor News' driveway. The one on the right is still there, but obscured by a 1950s commercial addition in front. The one on the left is long gone, and so is the building that replaced it, which until recently housed Tio's Mexican cafe.

Thank goodness I found the fast forward button. The action is a little slow, but offers a great perspective on the news industry and Ann Arbor 70 some years ago. The shot of Burton Tower being constructed was neat. Except for the cars and white-poled street lights, Huron St., in front of the News Building looks virtually the same. I wonder if the houses shown near the end of the movie are still there? If so, where?

I always thought that the Ann Arbor News was a spoof on a real newspaper.
