Downbeat magazine's 33rd annual Student Music Awards have a couple of local connections.

Galen Bostian Kentes, a Western Michigan University student from Ann Arbor, was recognized three times: as an outstanding performance for undergraduate blues/pop/rock soloist (vocals), as a winner for undergraduate blues/pop/rock group for his band Compendium, and as a winner for undergraduate jazz arrangement for “I Believe” by Stevie Wonder.

Advanced One, a band from Ann Arbor's Community High School, led by Jack Wagner, was recognized as an outstanding performance for a high school jazz group.

The awards were listed in the June issue of Downbeat, a respected jazz magazine.
