Although she's only 15 years old, Pioneer High School freshman Maggie Lemak is a published artist receiving national recognition.

Lemak’s painting, titled “Happy Day,” was chosen to be a cover design for personal planners produced by a local company, Dotmine Day Planners, and she was featured in Girls’ Life magazine's June/July issue as one of the magazine’s five favorite teen entrepreneurs.

Owned by Ann Arbor entrepreneurs Lisa Edwards and Sarah Nicoli, Dotmine Day Planners is celebrating its 10th year of business this summer. The company creates 17-month day planners under three different brands: time.mine, family_time.mine and life_time.mine. Each brand targets different age groups, from teens to moms and professionals.

Lemak’s painting will be used as one of the covers for time.mine planners, aimed at students like Lemak herself. The painting was also featured on Dotmine’s Facebook page Friday.

Intrigued by another one of Lemak’s paintings at the Ann Arbor Kids Art Fair last summer, Nicoli asked her to paint a cover for the 2012 planners.

“We liked the feeling Maggie’s painting had. With bright colors and a happy subject, it had a broad appeal,” Nicoli said.

Although the company has a variety of sources for cover designs — original designers from many areas throughout the continent — Nicoli explained that Lemak is the first local artist she and Edwards have contacted. She added that she plans on working with Lemak again in the future for more cover designs.

Having started at a young age, Lemak said she always paints with bright colors.

“My inspiration for ‘Happy Day’ was to make something that would make people happy, so I used bright, fun colors,” she explained.

Lemak added that she was shocked and excited when she was approached by Nicoli.

“I never thought I would have the opportunity to paint for commercial purposes,” she said.

In the most recent June/July issue of the magazine, Lemak gave advice to other teen entrepreneurs: “Love what you do, and don’t let business change that.”

With her passion for art, Lemak plans to continue her painting practices.

“I definitely hope to have more opportunities to paint for people. But if I don’t, I will still paint on my own,” she said.
