Locally shot movie gets slot in Detroit-Windsor film festival

By AnnArbor.com Freelance Journalist

“Starlight and Superfish,” a feature film shot in Ann Arbor and Detroit, will screen at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival on Friday, June 25, at 9 p.m. at the Wayne State Welcome Center.

Written by Rob Hess and directed by Steve Kopera, the local duo of The Triumvirate Company have been making films in Michigan for the past 10 years. Not only did the entire crew have ties to the wolverine state, but all were also staff, alumni, or current students of the University of Michigan.

The story opens with Nick (Hayes Hargrove, “Art House,” “Burn Notice”), a naturally timid and nervous person, trapped in his apartment, and informed by a British glam-rock band that he is dead. Rex (Matthew Jure, “Hip Hip Hooray”) and his band mates are there to accompany Nick as he attempts to learn all the valuable life lessons he ignored while he was alive, all within the confines of his former living space. Then, he will be judged by God and sent either to Heaven or Hell - a jarring concept for an atheist.

The colorful, creative, and music-filled story also highlights the talents of Carey Peters (“Beyond the Pale”), Tim Brennen (“Burn Notice”, “Hancock”), and Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Douchebag,” “Reno 911!”).

“Starlight & Superfish” screening: Friday, June 25, 9 p.m., Wayne State University Welcome Center, 42 West Warren, Detroit.
