Mat Zo at Necto

By Elisha Israel

This past Wednesday, February 20th, I stopped into Necto in Ann Arbor to catch a set by Mat Zo.

Mat Zo comes from a musical family. His sister, Alma Zohar is one of the top grossing singers in Israel, and his mother is a professional violinist.

His music is classified as high energy electronic, utilizing extended builds with vocal samples layered within the songs.

My favorite song that he played had a middle eastern feel to it, possibly a sample from a Hebrew prayer. The song built and then dropped into an anthem of a house track. He utilizes emphasized snares and textured sounds in order to keep the crowd dancing.

The crowd was a mix of 18-24 year olds, brandishing glow-sticks and chanting arrhythmically to the songs.

Mat Zo is incredibly young, only 22 years old. With his musical background and his youthful success, expect big things from this up and coming producer/DJ.
