Michigan Roots Jamboree returning to Ypsilanti this summer

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Organizers of an Ypsilanti music festival that debuted last year to much positive reaction today announced the event will return this summer with an altered name and at least one major new feature.

The Michigan Roots Jamboree will take place Aug. 6 and 7 at Ypsilanti's Riverside Park, according to the announcement from the nonprofit Depot Town Community Development Corporation.

Formerly called The Jamboree, the event combines music, art and other activities in an outdoor setting. Two stages are planned, and the lineup is already available online, featuring a lots of local favorites working in a variety of genres.

The new development this year: an option for "urban camping" at Frog Island Park.

As stated in today's announcement, "The DTCDC Board is committed to enhancing the quality of life for the Ypsilanti area. We believe the Michigan Roots Jamboree will be a great community building event. All proceeds from this event will be used to support our local parks and improve community spaces."

Tickets are now available from the Jamboree website.

I agree with the above. I won't attend until it gets its "Ypsitucky Jamboree" name back. Stupid local politics.

I'd be happy to volunteer and/or contribute, but I just can't support an event that denigrates my heritage, or views any reference to the area's connection to southern roots as derogatory. Bring back the Ypsitucky Jamboree, and I'll be there. "Michigan Roots Jamboree" is just so stupidly over the top politically correct that it makes me want to vomit.

@youngdz79, I don't think these two events will hurt each other, as they tend to draw different folks. (Though I admit I love both events) Also, I think it will be great fun to have huge formations of aircraft fly over the festival. (It never gets that loud when they pass over)

This will actually be a a bad weekend for this, as the Air show is that weekend. Though I hope that does become a major yearly event for Ypsi.
