Michigan to screen Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers favorite "Top Hat"
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are known for starring in some of the best movie musicals of the 1930s. If you're willing to accept their silly spirit and suspend disbelief a bit, these movies hold up remarkably well.
Monday, the Michigan Theater continues its series of classic musicals with 1935's "Top Hat." For my money, it's not quite the best Fred-and-Ginger movie, but it may well be the most typical.
It features a high-society setting; a rich, funny supporting cast including Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes, Eric Blore and Helen Broderick; and first-rate music. The songs for this movie were written by Irving Berlin, and they include "Cheek to Cheek," "No Strings," and "Top Hat, White Tie and Tails" - probably the single song that best defines Astaire's onscreen persona. Mark Sandrich, who really knew how to work with Astaire and directed several other movies with him, was the director.
Here's a trailer:
"Top Hat" screens at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21 at the Michigan, 603 E. Liberty St. Regular Michigan Theater prices apply: $9 regular; $7 students, seniors and children under 12: $6.50 for Michigan Theater members.
