Brian Steinberg, a video major at Washtenaw Community College, is working to secure an Ann Arbor premiere of Morgan Spurlock's ("Super Size Me") newest, buzzed-about documentary, "Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope."

Steinberg is using Tugg.com to book the screening. Tugg.com allows screenings to be crowdfunded, similar to Kickstarter or Groupon; using a crowdfunding model means that the theater takes no risk because it is guaranteed a minimum number of tickets sold.

Steinberg needs 40 advance tickets reserved to secure this one-time screening; at press time, only 3 tickets have been reserved, but the deadline is May 6.

If Steinberg's effort is successful, "Comic-Con" will be screened on Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Goodrich Quality 16, 3686 Jackson Road. Reserve tickets at http://tugg.com/events/538#.T5V2io441UV. Tickets are $9.

The screening will immediately follow a costume contest, with prizes awarded in the categories: best "Star Wars," best comic book character, best zombie, best original.

"What excites me about sites like Tugg.com as a video major is that it provides a new, independent distribution model to have movies screen in theaters," Steinberg wrote in an email. "The way it works now is that the small guy is pushed out before they get a chance because theaters don't want to risk theater space on an unknown. I totally understand that. But at the same time theaters go empty too.

"Some Tugg.com-promoted screenings even sell out. Taken as a whole, these one time independent films screenings can have a huge impact on the movie theater business by using a social media model to promote films and fill up idle theater. With sites like Tugg.com, new film makers like myself can take control of our film's future by getting access to theaters."

"Comic-Con" explores what has become an amazing cultural phenomenon by following the lives of 5 attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.

What started as a fringe comic book convention for 500 fans has grown into the pop culture event of the year that influences every form of entertainment, now attended by over 140,000 strong.

The film features interviews with Stan Lee, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith and Harry Knowles. Check out the trailer below.
