My Dear Disco has new name - Ella Riot - and a new video

By Bob Needham

My Dear Disco, one of Ann Arbor's most popular local bands over the past few years, has announced a name change: It's now Ella Riot.

The band plays what it calls "dance-think" music, a modern-day sort of danceable funk-rock. And along with the change in name comes a damn fine example of what they do: a new video for a song called "It Could Be."

As explained in a post on the band's website, the name change had its roots in the discovery of a similarly named band:

"First, we recently ran into the established Australian band, My Disco. It's a risky legal situation to keep our name, along with being plain confusing. After thinking about it more, we also realized we were also pretty tired of explaining to everyone “well, it’s not actually Disco music.” With all the new stuff about to come out, we decided now was the time to rename the band. And truth be told, we’re excited about it! Ella Fitzgerald is a big inspiration for Michelle. In Greek, Ella means “bright light” or “torch.” Then riot: a crowd, a revolution, chaos, a party, or something hilarious. Add this all up and you get an elegant, rebellious, brightly shining torch, moving with crowds of people, spinning out of control, ending in hilarious party chaos."

And as for the video, here it is, and it's pretty funny. If the location looks familiar, it was shot along South First Street in Ann Arbor.

The band plays the Blind Pig on Sunday night.
