OOOOkk Lahoma, Where the Wind Comes Sweepin' Down the Plain
A new year is right around the corner! Theatre Guild will be singing, acting, dancing, painting, building, sewing, and designing our way back into the swing of things. Workshops and auditions for our fall musical, "Oklahoma!", will be beginning shortly, and we are ever so excited to be working with U of M students Mary Michael Patterson, Kevin Munhall, Brian Buckner, and Desi Oakley.
"Oklahoma!" is the groundbreaking show that forever changed American Musical Theater. It is considered to be the classic of all classics, the epitome of what musical theater is all about. The Rodgers and Hammerstein original follows settlers in Oklahoma’s Indian territory. A box social dance creates tension between Laurey, a young farm girl, and her two suitors; Curly, a good-looking cowboy, and Jud, a sinister farm hand, Laurey chooses Jud, but later realizes her love for Curley. Meanwhile, Ado Annie, a young a flirtatious girl, is caught in a triangle with her two lovers- Will, her boyfriend who returns from Kansas City after spending all of his money on gifts for her, and Ali, a Persian peddler. The story follows these women, along with a fabulous cast, as love travels into unknown and sometimes dangerous territory, similar to the land the story takes place on. With songs that have become American standards, including “Oh! What a Beautiful Morning”, “People Will Say We’re in Love”, and “Oklahoma!”, this show is a fabulous and innovative display of American history, with a few twists along the way. The show will open in early November, $12 for adults and $9 for students, seniors, and PHS staff. As the year kicks off, I will be giving more detailed accounts of our rehearsal process and backstage events, so please stay tuned!!!
