Bob the Builder rolls into the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum
The Bob the Builder — Project Build It traveling exhibit has arrived at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, and I can verify it was a hit with one little local boy.
I took my 3-year-old son there a couple of days ago to check it out, and he spent the first 10 minutes just running around like a kid on Christmas morning. "Look! Look! Look!" he kept saying at every turn.
The 2,000 square-foot multimedia exhibit, inspired of course by the popular television series, has kid-sized replicas of Roley, Muck and other members of the crew, which kids can climb into and pretend to drive.
My son tried out all of the vehicles first, then found an innovative use for the foam blocks (sliding down the slide on them), and finally settled down enough to do some of the activities, such as the workbench puzzle.
There's a sink that kids can take apart, toy power tools that make satisfying loud noises, and a light bench like architects use.
AAHOM Executive Director Mel Drumm said the exhibit aims to get kids thinking about construction and how things are built, and is set up to encourage teamwork and cooperative play.
"Once you have a large number of kids in here and the group dynamic kicks in," Drumm said. "The other museums [that have had this exhibit] have had a hard time getting people out when it's time to close."
The exhibit will be at the Hands-On Museum through February.

I'm looking forward to finally meeting Bob in person. I'm one of his biggest fans.
