Colby the wonder dog.

We live in a city rich with inspirational talent. One of my favorite local literary superstars is Laura Pershin Raynor, storyteller extraordinaire. If you spend much time at the library, you have no doubt seen Laura's bright smile. And if you've taken your kids to story time at the downtown branch, you know how easily Laura can mesmerize a crowd of children and adults with her stories.

Another local literary personality for whom I have much respect is Colby Roderique. Colby is a Canine Assistants CASE (Canine Assistant Special Educator) dog who has been working in Michigan for five years. She was named 826michigan's Volunteer-of-the-Month in May 2009 in honor of her passionate dedication to inspiring young readers and writers.

On Thursday, these two wonderful creatures team up to present "Catchy Canine Tales" in the Youth Story Corner of the Downtown Library. The event takes place at 10 a.m., and promises "fun furry stories, songs and a demonstration of Colby's talents." If you and your kids are free Thursday morning, I advise you to check it out.
