Fit Mommy: Are you 'Bon Bon?' Try to eat mindfully

Bon Bon = Good Good

The old adage about staying at home with kids, eating bon bons, is still funny to me. As a full time, stay-at-home mom for five years, I was never given the opportunity to sit around and watch soap operas and stuff bon bons in my mouth! However, I had to research bon bons, just so that I knew what these things are!

First of all, the title 'Bon Bon' is actually French for "Good, Good!" (from wikipedia.org) It is just a chocolate candy that is beautifully decorated and yummy. The phrase 'good good' has now taken me to a question I would like to ask you...

Are you "good good?" Do you ever eat junkfood in front of the television without being mindful of what you are eating? I am sure you do because almost everybody does it from time to time.

If you are trying to lose weight, I would advise you to take your 'good goods' and measure them out in a specified amount before settling on the couch. It is way too easy to watch the deliciously sexy banter between Richard Castle and Kate on the show Castle and devour 8,000 calories if you don't. You will eat youself into a 'bad bad' oblivion and regret it later with a stomach ache and weight gain.

Keep your 'good good' portioned out and in control, even during your next delectable TV splurge...You can thank me later!

This is so true. I never used to be a big snacker when I was younger and watched tv. Maybe because I was also chatting away on the phone. Over the past few years it had become a BAD habit especially last winter it seemed of sitting on the couch by my husband and we'd both have our snacks (bag of chips, Doritos, or whatever) near us and watch TV. Needless to say suddenly a whole bag of chips was gone in two sittings....which is as you already know HORRIBLE! In early spring last year I went to the dr for my physical and while I wasn't obese I weighed more then I ever had in my whole life. I asked the doctor what he though and he basically said well you're not too bad yet but if this continues. I could also see it in pics. So I started trying to make sure I got a bowl or cup to make it a smaller portion and once it was gone drink a glass of water or get a bowl of baby carrots instead. I still struggle at times but can see a huge difference. As well asked for the Wii Fit for Mother's Day/my birthday. That way I could be sure to get my physical exercise even when it wasn't nice out. I'm proud to say I'm at a good BMI now of 22.48 BUT I know it won't take much for that to slip especially as things cool down. During the summer it's easier since I just take the kids I am watching or my own kids on longer walks to the library, parks, etc. The winter I am not a big cold person and it's not always pratical to do those same things with the kids. Anyhow overall kudos for a very valid and important article!
