Here's a craft you can make using your leftover pumpkins - A pumpkin bird feeder! Note, not a pumpkinbird feeder. We made these at Tiny Tots last week at the Leslie Science and Nature Center.

You'll need pumpkin slices, seeds (sunflower seeds add color, but pumpkin seeds could be used), string (biodegradeable), a stick or spoon to make a hole for the string, craft (popsicle) sticks, and sticks.

Here's how we did it:

  • Have an adult slice the pumpkins.

  • For young children, use the craft stick to make holes for the seeds. Older children can poke holes themselves. Adults can push the seeds through the pumpkin without holes.
  • Insert seeds into the holes.
  • Using a stick, dowel, or spoon handle, poke a hole through the pumpkin on one end.
  • Insert the string through the hole and tie it into a loop.
  • Poke smaller sticks into the pumpkin for perches.
  • Place the pumpkin slice onto a branch.
  • Not only birds enjoy the seeds, but squirrels and other critters do too.

The next Tiny Tots program will be on Oct. 30, from 9:30-11am at the Leslie Science and Nature Center. The theme will be "Where the Wild Things Are", costumes are encouraged. Parents are free with a paid child ($7 per child). Siblings are welcome.
