On Wednesday night, the Gem Theatre in downtown Detroit played host to the Wilde Awards — local LGBT publication Between the Lines' regional, annual awards for professional theater, voted on by its team of critics. (In the interest of full disclosure, I am part of that team.)

Area theaters — Ann Arbor's Performance Network and Blackbird Theatre, Chelsea's Purple Rose Theatre, and Dexter's Encore Theatre — earned numerous nominations, and when it came time to announce the winners, three of these companies took home hardware (and Ann Arbor Civic Theatre earned a special award).

Here's a list of local winners:

Best design, props: Charles Sutherland, "It Came From Mars," Performance Network and Williamston Theatre co-production.

The Jim Posante Community Pride Award: Ann Arbor Civic Theatre (for staging "The Laramie Project" despite threatened protests from the Westboro Baptist Church).

Best design, lights: Andrew Hungerford, "K2," Performance Network.

Best production of a new script: "It Came from Mars," Performance Network and Williamston Theatre co-production, Tony Caselli, director.

Best drama: "K2," Performance Network, Tim Rhoze, director.

Best teamwork: James Bowen and John Michael Manfredi, "K2," Performance Network.

Best actor, comedy: Jacob Hodgson, "It Came from Mars," Performance Network and Williamston Theatre co-production.

Best actress, musical: Sarah Litzsinger, "Sweeney Todd," Encore Theatre.

Critics Choice Award: Purple Rose Theatre for design and technical excellence, "Gravity"

Best musical: "Little Shop of Horrors," Performance Network, Carla Milarch, director.

Best supporting actor, musical: Aaron T. Moore, "Little Shop of Horrors," Performance Network.

Best actress, comedy: Suzi Regan, "The Blonde, the Brunette, and the Vengeful Redhead," Performance Network.

Also, Wilde-r Awards — which are lighthearted, honorary "for fun" awards that don't involve a statuette — were announced for local companies as well. "Best performance by a man, stuffed," went to Juan in the Purple Rose show "Wake"; "Best upstaging by a 4 legged cast member" went to the dog that played Sandy in Encore's "Annie"; and the "It's so groovy" award went to the Blackbird Theatre's "Midsummer Night's Dream," with its '60s-themed set by Monika Essen.
