Anyone can play at Pianos 'Round Town in Ypsilanti

By Jennifer Eberbach

People in Ypsilanti will soon be tickling the ivories all over town. The second annual “Pianos ‘Round Town” will happen Sept. 9 through 27. Pianos will be placed outside of businesses at 8 locations in Depot Town and downtown Ypsilanti, and anyone can sit down and play.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a piano virtuoso ready to wow passers by with an impromptu concert or if you just want to sit down and see if you remember how to play "Chopsticks." The pianos will be waiting for you.

During business hours, find pianos in Depot Town at Nelson Amos Studio (23 E. Cross Street), Cafe Racer (10 E. Cross Street), Ypsilanti Food Co-op (312 N. River Street), Sidetrack (56 E. Cross Street), and Depot Town Dispensary (35 E. Cross). Downtown, find pianos at Mix (130 W. Michigan Ave.) and B-24 (217 W. Michigan Ave). Closer to campus, find a piano at Tower Inn Cafe (701 W. Cross Street).

View a map of all 8 locations.

If you want to brush up on your piano playing skills, stop into Nelson Amos Studio (23 E. Cross Street) for free piano lessons whenever Korin Hancherlian-Amos is in. The studio is one of the sponsors of the event, along with Steinway Piano Gallery of Detroit, the Ypsilanti CVB, and the Depot Town Association.

Last year, Ko Kaiden sang along as Hancherlian-Amos played, just one of the many videos posted to the event's YouTube channel. The event also has a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

I have an uncontrollable urge to go down there to every piano and play the first line to, "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms," getting the last two notes wrong.
