Sandra Bullock drops two bombshells; American Idol Live Tour kicks off in Detroit; Conan will speak on 60 Minutes; and more

* The big entertainment news story that’s got the internet buzzing today is Sandra Bullock’s double announcement: she adopted a 3 and ½ year old baby from New Orleans in January, and her family and friends kept the secret in order to keep the child out of the awards season spotlight; and she is divorcing cheating hubby Jesse James, whose adulterous scandals broke immediately after Bullock won her best actress Oscar for her performance in “The Blind Side.” OMG’s got more on the story.

MUSIC * The American Idol LIVE Tour, 2010, will kick off in Detroit - at the Palace in Auburn Hills - on July 1, with a lineup that includes Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Katie Stevens, and Tim Urban. Tickets go on sale May 14. * Poison rocker and “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant Bret Michaels, who was hospitalized Friday after suffering from a severe headache and speech problems, has been found to have a current sodium deficiency in his body, which could cause seizures. And while he recently suffered a minor setback, he is in critical but stable condition in a Los Angeles hospital. TELEVISION * In other “Idol” news, the New York Times Arts Beat Blog has this assessment of last night’s episode, which featured contestants performing the songs of Shania Twain.

ConanOBrien.jpg
* For a guy who doesn’t currently have a nightly show in the air, Conan O’Brien seems ubiquitous. Today we learn that the redheaded host will appear in his first interview since losing his gig as “Tonight Show” host on “60 Minutes” this Sunday, May 2. * Former star of “The Bachelor” Jake Pavelka got the boot - or the rhinestone-encrusted, high heeled, strappy dancing shoe - on “Dancing with the Stars,” getting emotional as he made his exit. Reuters provides a full re-cap. * The Michigan International Women’s Show happens Thursday through Sunday this week. So why do I file this under television? Because Top Chef winner Michael Voltaggio, and Project Runway season three contestant Johnathan Kayne, will be among those speaking and making appearances.

* “Sunset Daze” - a new reality show that focuses on a group of retirees in Arizona, beginning April 28 on We TV - gets a critical assessment from The Washington Post’s Hank Stuever, who thinks the show’s premise had potential, but along the way, it became just another bad reality TV show. Here’s a preview of the show. ART * The Detroit News reports that Detroit Institute of Arts ex-curator Jan van der Marck died on Monday, after a long battle with cancer. BOOKS * The New York Times reports that Irene Nemirovsky - who wrote what would become a bestselling novel, “Suite Francais,” more than 60 years after her death in Auschwitz - may be getting a critical reassessment in the near future, thanks to next month’s upcoming release a new biography and short story collection. According to some reports, she courted extreme-right wing friends and wrote “ugly, caricatured portraits of Jews,” despite being Jewish herself.

* A new book, titled “Fragments,” collects the writing of Marilyn Monroe and will be released this fall. Included are the starlet’s reflections on acting, relationships, literature, and more.

COMICS * Good grief. Newspaper publisher E. W. Scripps Co. has sold licensing rights for the Peanuts Gang for $175 million to Iconix Brand Group, Inc., the licensing company that owns Joe Boxer and London Fog.

THEATER

enron.jpg
* New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley doesn't put too much stock in "Enron," a British import that just opened on Broadway. Despite its vaudevillian influences, and contributions from Broadway stalwarts Marin Mazzie and Norbert Leo Butz, the show feels, in Brantley's opinion, labored; but Brantley nonetheless applauds the way the show brings the company's complex, corrupt economic schemes down to earth in a palatable way.

FOR FUN

William Shakespeare’s birthday has just passed - April 26 - but in 1964, the Beatles celebrated what would have been the bard’s 400th birthday by performing this bit from “Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 1964. Enjoy.
