MiniFest returning to Kerrytown Concert House with top chamber-music players

By Susan Isaacs Nisbett

If it’s June, it’s time for MiniFest, the three-concert series that brings artists from the Detroit-area Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival to Kerrytown Concert House.

This year’s concerts—June 15, 22 and 24—constitute the 13th annual Kerrytown installment of the festival. As in other years, they bring artists who are old friends and stalwarts of the international music scene; rising young musicians; and ensembles who are fellows of the festival’s Shouse Institute. So the concerts are great not only for hearing great chamber music in an intimate setting, but for catching the best and brightest lights of several generations.

PREVIEW

MiniFest

  • Who: Artists of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival.
  • What: Annual chamber-music celebration.
  • Where: Kerrytown Concert House, 415 N. Fourth Ave.
  • When: Friday, June 15, 8 p.m.; Friday, June 22, 8 p.m.; Sunday, June 24, 2 p.m.
  • How much: $15-$30. Reservations available from KCH at 734-769-2999, or online at kerrytownconcerthouse.com. Reservations advised, though tickets, if available, may be purchased at the door.
Among established and familiar, the KCH concerts include pianist James Tocco, also the festival’s director; cellist Paul Katz, a festival mainstay; and pianist Anton Nel, an Ann Arbor favorite.

The concerts also feature all four of the festival’s Shouse Institute ensembles—the Attacca Quartet, the Catalyst Quartet, the Sima Trio and the Trio Terzetto—plus a past Shouse ensemble, the Ariel Quartet, now the quartet in residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

The theme of this year’s festival is “White Nights.” Composers of Russian and Scandinavian descent are the focus, and if the KCH concerts reflect that focus to a lesser degree than others in the series, compositions by Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff nonetheless dot the programs. And who will complain with masterworks by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms and Ravel to round out the bills?

Here’s a look at repertoire and personnel for the KCH edition of MiniFest 2012. For a complete look at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, visit greatlakeschambermusic.org.
