Regional bluegrass takes center stage at The Ark this week
By Chrysta Cherrie
For two different takes on Michigan-bred bluegrass, head over to The Ark. First is the Telluride Bluegrass Festival-winning quintet Greensky Bluegrass on Thursday. Using traditional bluegrass instrumentation, Greensky "hits timeless targets with deadly accuracy while simultaneously veering off the tired and true highway," says Jambase.com, going from traditional bluegrass, to a rock 'n' roll jam, to a bluegrass-tinged Bob Marley cover. "Five Interstates" is their latest release.
On Saturday, The RFD Boys are up. If Greensky are the new kids on the block, then The RFD Boys are the statesmen, first playing in Ann Arbor as U-M students in 1969. Their tried-and-true sounds — and between-song humor — landed the group performance slots alongside the likes of Bill Monroe and Allison Krauss, as well as the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine.
