Students ready to compete in city-wide Ann Arbor Youth Poetry Slam Finals

By Ann Dwyer

It's the Youth Poetry Slam Finals.
The kids have gone through all the trials
To make it to the stage
At such a young age.
But why am I writing like Dr. Seuss, you may ask?
Because writing slam poetry is a difficult task,
And I'm kind of lazy.

Their poetry will be much better than mine, assuredly. These winners of the three semi-finals held over the past month will compete for one of six spots Thursday to represent Ann Arbor at the 2013 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Chicago.

Be sure to come early, as seats fill quickly.

Thursday, March 28, 6:30 p.m. $5 for students/$7 general public. For more information, call Neutral Zone at 734-214-9995 or go to www.neutral-zone.org. At B Side at The Neutral Zone, 310 E.Washington St., Ann Arbor.

I really recommend checking this out! I was impressed and moved (and sometimes pretty amused) when I checked out a local youth poetry slam at Community High for a story last year (http://www.annarbor.com/entertainment/a-glimpse-of-the-local-youth-poetry-slam-scene-as-competition-finals-grow-closer/). It's great to not only hear young people expressing their thoughts and feelings so articulately, but also to see them supporting each other as they take their turn at the mic. Good stuff.
