By Ann Dwyer

While Ann Arbor may seem like a safe place, the sad fact is that sexual assault is still with us. Hence the Take Back the Night Rally and March.

Take Back the Night is not just about assault in the streets after hours; it is about stopping any sexual assault. The event is meant to "raise awareness about sexual violence and to give survivors a voice," according to press release.

While it may not often be discussed, males are also victims. The rally will feature keynote speaker Gregg Milligan. As a childhood sexual abuse survivor, Gregg has become an international speaker and author.

There will be dance, singing and poetry performances to further spread the message.

Thursday, April 4, 2013. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Rally starts at 7 p.m. March to immediately follow. Free. At the Michigan Union, 530 S. State St., Ann Arbor. 734-763-5786.

When assault happened to me, there would have been no opportunity to find my purse and get out a firearm. A 5'2, 100 pound person has not much chance against a 5'10 180 pound person. My brother told me a wrestling coach told him all girls and women should learn the wrestling maneuvers because they can really help a person learn how to leverage their weight and strength to get out of a bad situation. It makes sense to me. Any opinions on this anyone?

A woman with training and a firearm has a much better chance of stopping a sexual assault than any ridiculous protest ever will

funny how this rally to take back the night starts on UM property, which prohibits people from legally defending themselves with firearms... I'll march, but only after it leaves UM property.
