Taking a bite out of Zingerman's Reuben

When he isn't playing bass with The Flaming Lips, Michael Ivins is quite the food enthusiast. This chowhounding is documented in a blog of commentary and photos he keeps at the band's web site.

In a recent entry, Ivins discussed his love of the Reuben, lamenting that many New York delis serve the sandwiches open-face. So he and the band took control of their culinary destiny, ordering a Reuben Sandwich Kit from Zingerman's with all the fixings from corned beef to potato salad. The verdict: "Now that's a Sandwich!!!!"

Check out photos of the final product in Ivins' blog. And for all things Zingerman's Reuben, there's the deli, the aforementioned kit or you can do it yourself.

On the Flaming Lips tip, their 13th LP, "Embryonic", just hit stores and marks a return to the band's wilder roots. The album is streaming on iMeem and NPR.

I always order the turkey Reuben, and have never been dissatisfied.

Their reubens are epic! My wife and I find sharing one to be plenty for both of us--just thinking of them makes me know what will be for dinner. (I'm glad we don't have to order a kit!)
