Tally Hall showed off what they've been doing the last few years to a sold-out crowd at the Blind Pig
Ann Arbor’s own Tally Hall made a triumphant return to their hometown on Friday night, performing in front of a sold-out crowd at the Blind Pig. The band is currently on tour following the release of their new album, “Good & Evil.”
It’s been six years since the band released an album following “Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum.” Started under Atlantic Records, the album was released by the band’s original label, Quack! Media.

The band performed in fine form on Friday, delivering carefully crafted vocals that have become a signature sound for the band. As Auto-Tune has taken over the music world allowing the most duck-voiced singer to think they are Aretha Franklin, Tally Hall is a refreshing drink of water.
A key to the band’s sound is not letting the instruments overpower the vocals, allowing the harmony of the vocals to blend with the songs as a whole.
But the instruments were no less important. Tally Hall creates colorful, clean sounds, allowing the keyboard to fill in the high end of the sound. The occasional use of theremin and jingle bells added to the whimsical sound the band is known for.
Performing songs such as “Never Meant to Know” from Good & Evil and “Welcome to Tally Hall” from MMMM, to the encore of their cover of Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend,” the group put on a show that was both danceable and a fine display of musicianship.
After the show, as the audience filtered out, it was obvious this was an all-ages show. While it would be easy to dismiss Tally Hall as a teeny-bopper band, it is actually a hopeful sign that maybe kids aren’t always fooled by stage antics, lip synching and Auto-Tune.
Tally Hall’s music can often be reminiscent of the Beatles, the Kinks, Cake (minus the monotonous vocals) with a dash of the Beastie Boys. If Tally Hall is the door to a younger generation’s discoveries into music, then all the better.
Speak and Casey Shea also performed.
