Hott Lava, wsg Mountains, and Dark Matter at the Yellow Barn this Friday
Here's the synopsis, pilfered from the Hott Lava website: A night of experimental film straddling the avant-garde & the trashy, showcasing the work of contemporary filmmakers as well as classic underground films otherwise sequestered to low-grade bootlegs & academic archives. Each event consists of a cherry picked selection of short films followed by a live musical performance by artists of note.
Rad.
This is the Friday to do it, since the special musical guest is Brooklyn-based "organic-electronic" duo Mountains, who are promoting their new album, "Choral," on Thrill Jockey Records (super sweet label). The performance is accompanying a film of the band's own creation.
After that piece of fun, stay for Dark Matter. Also, in their own words: Dark Matter returns! Forest Juziuk & Aaron Lindell celebrate one year of Dark Matter with DJs Geoff Perrin (Party Time with Geoff) & Robert Wells (Ann Arbor Soul Club).
It will be a night of sweaty, sweaty dancing to a soundtrack of int'l psych destroyers, soul & r&b stompers, peruvian cumbia, and post-punk. On projections: the brilliant Mr. Ted Kennedy!
Also rad.
Both shows are at the Yellow Barn. Doors are at 8pm, films start at 8:45. Dark Matter is 11pm-2am.
Tickets for Hott Lava/Dark Matter are available online at the Hott Lava website for $9. Tickets are $8 at the door, but this one is likely to be packed. $5 for film festival members. Tickets for Dark Matter only are $5, but you may have a tough time getting in.

Sean, I think asking to be credited for the photo is enough without having to berate the staff of annarbor.com for being pretentious or "drunk with power"(!!). In my personal experience, annarbor.com is relatively quick to correct mistakes where needed. Pointing out a mistake is one thing, criticism is another, and raking someone over the coals is something completely different.

attribution is a necessary part of a news organization. in university they would call it plagiarism. i understand your concept of "you create a poster for someone, it is considered promotional material owned by them" and thats fine, i have dealt with that many times over. however, the blatant disregard of citing any photo that isnt affiliated with annarbor.com is visible. look around at a few random stories. you clearly cite when a photo is taken by a staff member, but others, "ehhh who cares?" if your brother would of made it, it would of been cited. thats the issue. the reason for a high res download goes beyond it being used by press, overall its there because its looks great blown up and people like having it as their background. its much more democratic than "press use only". im an artist and i like people looking at my art up close. im also a local guy that likes getting gigs from people that see my name on something that looks nice. overall, i really wouldnt of cared if i hadnt read anything by you guys that was downright silly. however that isnt the case and it seems more like a pretentious, drunk with power scenario than laziness. it seemed like you guys needed to be called out on it. i really like the idea of annarbor.com, however i think alot of things need to get honed before it reaches the "ahem" big time. things always get better over time, however its seldom if that happens without criticism.

Sean, Both images were taken from the official page for the event on Facebook. If I recall correctly, the flyer was downloadable. There was no attribution for either listed on the page, or it would have been given for the photo. It is not common practice to give attribution for an event flyer/poster; if you create a poster for someone, it is considered promotional material owned by them. I understand that you're upset, it's frustrating to see your work without attribution. And I (I take the onus for this, since it's my blog post) always attribute where possible and appropriate. But, to reiterate, since the photo was taken from the official event page where it was not attributed, it is considered promotional material and above board. I will e-mail my editor and be sure that a photo credit is added on the shot of Forest and Erin.

to whom it may concern, i am the creator of both images in the story. i created the print and took this picture of my friends. at the present moment, i am pretty upset with your organization and how you have run this to date. to run a news organization (if we can call it that at this time...) without attributions, lousy information, copy & paste jobs, random inconsistencies is more than irresponsible. i made these 2 images. i was there. you werent. therefore you cite the photographer. these were on my flickr and on the facebook page, no attribution needed because i did it. however you lifted these like an amateur blog. now you arent that are you? i demand better out of a local news source. if you would like to rectify your mistake my name is sean patrick. i hope you guys take better care of the local news, as we lost our paper, if you didnt notice...

Thanks for posting this. I wrote a little preview last month but spaced on filing it under The Deuce. Plus I think Erin and Forest should be hyped whenever possible.
