I am definitely skipping the museum this evening and going to the tractor pull instead

This summer I've hit the fair circuit pretty hard. I've been to the Chelsea Community Fair, the Michigan State Fair (pour some lemonade out for our fallen tradition!), the Jaycees Carnival at Pioneer High School, and some carnival at a school in a suburb of Detroit (the name eludes me).

There are good lessons to be learned at the fair. I taught my 5-year-old son that it's a good idea to win prizes for girls - he won his friend Stella an inflatable dolphin - and that it's best to avoid standing directly behind a horse. Someday I also hope to impart the wisdom that he should never, ever wear an outfit/t-shirt that matches that of his girlfriend, no matter how persuasive she is.

I love everything about the fair. I love the rides, the animals, the food, the games, the carnival barkers, the people watching... but most of all, I love the Demolition Derby.

Ah, the Demolition Derby. The smell of gasoline and burning compounds, the roar of the crowd, the splatter of mud, the announcer coming in over the speakers, the kids selling popcorn and Mountain Dew. Plus, I was introduced this year to a new game, wherein everyone in the group puts in a dollar for each round and gets to pick three cars. At the end of the derby, if one of your cars wins it all, you get the cash.

But I have yet to attend a tractor pull. And, although my nerdy intellectual side wants to check out the Warhol Snapshots show at UMMA this evening, I think I'm going to have to hit fair No. 5 tonight, in Saline.

Last summer, at least, the Saline Community Fair was the only one that I attended that still served cheap beer in big cups. Wow. I just convinced myself. The tractor pull is tonight at 7 p.m. It's Two Wheel Drive, Super Stock, Super Farm. I have no idea what that means but it sounds extremely awesome.

Oh, that's a bummer. I just sent an email to the fair officials to confirm, and I'm hoping you're wrong (not because I want to be right, but, well, in this case I want o be right because I want a beer in a big plastic cup). But you sound pretty sure. Oh well. If it's anything like the video Ed just posted, no beer required. It's still going to totally rule.
