What I learned at the Art Fair, including finding faith in a teabag holder.

By Jordan Miller

For the first time this year, I had the unique Art Fair vantage point of actually sitting in a booth. Which was perfect, since it allowed me to uphold a respectable level of Art Fair disdain, while getting to experience both the excellent people watching and the really good clothing sales, because I was there by obligation.

Our booth for the Ann Arbor Skatepark was in the non-profit section, so I also came home with several Holy is the Lord clay teabag holders and a book introducing me to Buddhism.

Some things that I learned from this experience: 1. Do not eat Funnel Cake. Just don't. I ate half of one around 3pm and, by 6, was so ill that I couldn't pick up the phone because I was afraid what would happen if I opened my mouth. 2. If you are a man of generous proportions, and you are feeling even slightly overheated, it is your duty to remove your shirt. Especially if you are pushing a stroller or wearing a whimsical hat. 3. Pan flutes aren't just for subway platforms anymore! 4. Apparently people like to put on tie-dye to come to Ann Arbor. Normally, the only people in Ann Arbor wearing rainbow tie-dye are kids at day camp and that really nice guy who works at the new Whole Foods. 5. A good way to show fidelity to your boyfriend is to write "Jims Only" across the crotch of your jeans (the name has been changed, the mental image has, sadly, not). Although, I would note, that the absence of an apostrophe makes this message open for other gentlemen of the same name. Just in case you're thinking of trying this out, it's best to learn from others' mistakes. 6. If you are walking with a friend, and feel a slight pressure somewhere on your person, it is probably a local resident adorning you with Support the Ann Arbor Skatepark stickers.

What can I say? When you've been sitting in the sun for six hours trying to hassle people for money, you get a little goofy. Photos of me, applying Ann Arbor Skatepark stickers to unsuspecting Art Fair visitors, by Trevor Staples.

He really did jazz up your booth. All we had was Run-DMC played out my phone speakers. Although it did have a very DIY aspect to it.

On my way to the Fair, an entire family got on the bus wearing tie-dyed shirts as a way of keeping track of one other. I would have complained about the fashion, but the kids were so stinkin' adorable I couldn't speak from all the cavities they gave me. BTW, I would love to have an Ann Arbor Skatepark sticker for my bike.
