The diner scene in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti

By Bob Needham

Today's Concentrate has a nice roundup of diners in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Five different spots are profiled - the Fleetwood, naturally, along with a beautiful photo, but also Village Kitchen and Ypsilanti's Bomber, Wolverine and Big Sky Diner. Leia Menlove is the author.

Village Kitchen was at least a weekly stop for my family when I was growing up, it's nice to see that they are still around and after a couple of years as a breakfast and lunch place only, is open in the evening again.

Perhaps it's not a "diner" but I'm a huge fan of breakfast at Northside Grill. Excellent food!

I consider the Fleetwood the only true diner but according to Wiki: "A diner is a prefabricated restaurant building characteristic of North America, especially on Long Island; in New York City; in New Jersey, and other areas of the Northeastern United States, although examples can be found throughout the US and in Canada. Some people apply the term not only to the prefabricated structures, but also to restaurants that serve cuisine similar to traditional diner cuisine even if they are located in more traditional types of buildings. Diners are characterized by a wide range of foods, mostly American, a casual atmosphere, a counter, and late operating hours." The Bomber is a smoke filled stench hole and I would not send my dog to eat there!

Cafe Ambrosia is the coffeehouse Dan mentions. And it's handily located right by Frank's Restaurant, which easily could have been included in Concentrate's diner roundup.

I noticed the other day that the coffeehouse on Maynard (I forget it's name, sorry) between William and Liberty is now open 24 hours. It doesn't really qualify as a diner, but it's somewhere to get something at 3 am, if you want it or need it.

I love Concentrate--they always make me interested in things I would have walked right by. I've long lamented the lack of diners in A2, one of my few criticisms. Where am I supposed to get a stack of plate-sized pancakes for $3 at 1 AM? Only at the Miss Worcester in Boston? Lame. Parity now!

This was a nice list. I almost forgot about Village Kitchen. The Bomber seems like a good place.
