UMS and Michigan Theater present Alan Bennett's "The Habit of Art" on screen on Sunday

By Jenn McKee

On Sunday, May 9, the University Musical Society (UMS) and the Michigan Theater will join forces again to present the third of 3 high definition screenings of live theater performances by London's National Theatre.

The new, critically acclaimed play by Alan Bennett ("The History Boys"), called "The Habit of Art," takes the screen at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Michigan, 603 East Liberty Street.

In the play, Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, "Death in Venice," seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W.H. Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first in 25 years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer, as well as a young man from the local bus station.

Bennett’s new play is as much about the theater as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

"Habit" contains adult content and is not suitable for children under 15 years. For additional information, visit the NT Live website.

For tickets or additional information, call 734-764-2538 or visit the UMS website. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the League Ticket Office at 911 North University Avenue.

NT Live broadcasts performances of plays produced by the National Theatre in London onto cinema screens worldwide. In the U.S., these screenings are delayed broadcasts to accommodate the time difference. Broadcasts also feature behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with actors.
