Friday's Top of the Park: Music after work with Dave Sharp's Secret 7; Howling Diablos; NOMO; DJ after dark

Here's an introduction to the acts appearing Friday, July 2 at Top of the Park — the Ann Arbor Summer Festival's free, outdoor component, held outside the Rackham Building, on East Washington Street at Ingalls Mall. And don't forget the Top of the Park Photo Contest, presented by AnnArbor.com for the festival.

The KidZone Tent is open from 5-8 p.m.

In a change this year, Top of the Park music on Friday starts at 5 p.m., and festival organizers are hoping that downtown employees might stop by after work.

Here are tonight's headline attractions:

Dave Sharp's Secret 7 Rackham Stage, Ingalls Mall, 5 p.m.

Dave Sharp's Secret Seven transcends musical, national and ethnic boundaries by re-interpreting (not fusing) influences from Africa, Asia, the Latin world, Blue Note jazz, and New Orleans. The band is fronted by former Melvins bassist Dave Sharp and features tenor saxophonist Chris Kaercher. Rounding out the Secret Seven sound are drums and percussion by Eric “Chucho ” Wilhelm, and Dale Grisa on Hammond B3 organ and piano.

Howling Diablos Rackham Stage, 7 p.m.

The Howling Diablos' rockin', funky, blues jam style is well known in southeast Michigan and is a stellar live music experience. Since their formation in the '90s they have toured with and opened for artists including George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, Alice Cooper, Albert Collins, Ben Harper, Hank Williams Jr, NRBQ, Incubus and The James Gang, as well as headlining their own shows.

Performing since: 1990. Style of music: Bluesy funky rock. Members: Tino Gross, Johnny Evans, Mo Hollis, Erik Gustafson, Johnny Badanjek. Pre-show ritual: Writing set list. Favorite road food: Coffee and Cheetos. Desert island disc: Jimi Hendrix "Axis: Bold as Love" Best thing about Ann Arbor: Trees, hippies, Hash Bash.

NOMO Rackham Stage, 9 p.m.

NOMO is a dazzling sonic array of rhythm and giant horns that will move the entire street into a hip-swiveling blast of righteous full on Afro-funk. This eight-piece collective is inspired by world grooves, big-band jazz, funk, and electronic music.

DJ Smokey “Baby Powder” Johnson Grove Stage, 10:30 p.m.

Smokey "Baby Powder" Johnson is the sole inventor of "porno groove music." During the '70s, Smokey DJ'd/performed/sang at some of the biggest events you can imagine and everywhere else you wish you could be.

Performing since: The early '70s Home base: Ann Arbor Style of music: Disco, funk, soul and R&B. Members: Just me, baby. I like to gig alone. Pre-show ritual: Yeah, man... I can dig it. Favorite road food: Who needs food when you...... Yeah man. Desert island disc: Balos with all my favorite toppings.. Best thing about Ann Arbor: The women.... Can you dig it?
