Two more feature films set to shoot in Ann Arbor area

By Jenn McKee

Apparently once the sun comes back to Ann Arbor, the feature film crews do, too.

According to Production Weekly, a crew for the Paramount aerial action-adventure "Northern Lights" has opened production offices in Ann Arbor, and filming is scheduled to start in early June.

Directed by John Moore ("Max Payne"), "Lights" has a synopsis, at the Internet Movie Database, that reads: "Set against the backdrop of extreme flying, 'Northern Lights' follows four young pilots as they compete against the world's best. A story of teamwork, sacrifice, loss, and victory, these young aviators push themselves to physical and emotional limits in the unforgiving world of performance aerobatics."

Although Tom Cruise was originally rumored to be in the film, he won't be involved; and while Taylor Lautner ("New Moon") has previously been attached to the project, recent reports claim that Lautner and "Lights"' team have parted ways due to "casting issues."

So who will be appearing in it? We'll have to wait and see.

The second film, "Salvation Boulevard," will be filming in the area in May, but the company won't be based in Ann Arbor, according to the Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau's Kay Seaser.

Directed by George Ratliff ("Hell House"), "Salvation" has several big stars attached: Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, Ed Harris, Marisa Tomei, Jim Gaffigan and Jennifer Connelly.

City of Ann Arbor Communications Unit Manager Lisa Wondrash confirmed that she's received an application from "Salvation"'s team, and the IMDB synopsis reads, "a former Deadhead-turned-born-again-Christian finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church, who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor."

Stay tuned for more details as film crews prepare to work in our area.
