U-M musical theater program offers chance to "See Rock City" this weekend
Fans of the University of Michigan's musical theater program, take note: A studio production of "See Rock City and Other Destinations" happens this weekend at Walgreen Drama Center's Arthur Miller Theatre, at 1226 Murfin.
Brad Alexander and Adam Mathias' "See Rock" — winner of the 2008 Richard Rodgers Award and The BMI Foundation's 2007 Jerry Bock Award — is a contemporary pop-rock musical about everyday travelers at tourist destinations across America.
A wanderer believes his destiny is written on rooftops along the North Carolina Interstate; a young man yearns to connect with intelligent life in Roswell, New Mexico; a woman at the Alamo steps out of the shadow of her grandparents' idealized romance to take a chance on love; three estranged sisters cruise to Glacier Bay to scatter their father's ashes; two high school boys face unexpected fears in the Coney Island Spook House; and a terrified bride-to-be ponders taking the leap — over Niagara Falls.
Brent Wagner directs the production, with Cynthia Kortman Westphal providing music direction. "See Rock" is recommended for mature audiences, and showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $16 ($9 for students) and available at 734-764-2538, the League Ticket Office at 911 N. University, or through the department's site.
