Who's the best Rock and Roll Hall of Famer with Ann Arbor roots?

By Bob Needham

Last night the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum inducted its latest class of honorees.

This year's batch included Alice Cooper, the latest in a long line of performers from Michigan who've made it into the hall.

Three of those acts have pretty strong ties to Ann Arbor, and remarkably, all three are still making news today:

Bob Seger, the iconic heartland rocker who grew up in Ann Arbor and started playing music here. He was inducted into the hall in 2006, and still generates tremendous interest: News of a new tour has had fans excited for weeks.

Madonna, who was a dance student at the University of Michigan in the late 1970s before seeking fame and fortune in New York. She was inducted in 2008 and, of course, continues to be rather well known.

The Stooges, the pioneering punk band led by Iggy Pop whose influence has grown tremendously over the years. They were inducted last year, and next month return to Ann Arbor for a special tribute to original guitarist Ron Asheton.

So — who ya got?

The results of this poll (so far) make me sad. Nothing against Seger, but this is The Stooges we're talking about. There is no comparison. (And Madonna? Seriously?)

It should be duly noted, that Jim Osterberg was voted most likely to succeed in his 9th Grade class at Tappan Junior High.

I am thankful that I come from such a diverse community with such an abundance of talent. We are fortunate to have artists and musicians of all different varieties and levels of talent. It is easy to take for granted the level of accomplishment of so many in this community of ours. One only needs to travel to realize how lucky we are. My classmate Bob Seger has been very successful and deservedly so. His fan following is loyal and spans several generations. I chose Bob but I really look forward to seeing Mr Osterberg and Henry Rollins upcoming show in memory of Ron Asheton! And Madonna is also a talented artist and a marketing genius! How many communities of our size can claim such talent?

All 3 changed the land scape so to speak. the marketing of madonna with the advent of MTV is quite incredible. She branded herself and her Music. But, my vote is for Jim Osterberg and the Stooges.

Stooges without a doubt, since they haven't seen fit to add the MC5 yet.
