Millions of fans will watch the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament but many of them have no idea their vision is being threatened by glaucoma – the name given to a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve at the back of the eye is slowly destroyed. To combat this disease – which is the leading cause of blindness in the world – all proceeds from the 2010 March Madness Against Blindness (MMAB) event will support the research of Kellogg glaucoma specialist, Sayoko E. Moroi, M.D., Ph.D.
Myron Hepner, the force behind this annual event which is now in its fourth year, will collect pledges while he watches all 32 games of the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Damon's Grill. Hepner created MMAB in 2007 to thank the physicians and staff at Kellogg who treated his son, Brendan, for retinoblastoma – a cancer of the eye – when he was only 9 months old. Brendan, now a healthy 8-year-old, returns to Kellogg for annual checkups.
