Presented by F. X. Widaryanto, a famous Javanese choreographer, and his dance and music students of the University of Michigan Gamelan.

On March 27, 2011, the University of Michigan Gamelan Ensemble will present a dance drama of the pan-Islamic story of Amir Hamzah. This dance drama and the gamelan music that accompanies it are the work of FX Widaryanto, renowned choreographer and accomplished gamelan musician, who is a visiting artist in residence at UM for academic year 2010-2011.Widaryanto’s interpretation of the age-old epic focuses on the brotherly love that Amir Hamzah, uncle of the Prophet Mohammad, feels for Allah and all mankind. That love flows like water, and in Javanese culture, water is a crucial symbol of love, as it nurtures, calms, and animates all living things.

The concert and conference are sponsored by the Residential College, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, LSA, Center for World Performance Studies Artist Resident Program, the Islamic Studies Program,, Humanities Institute, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, Office of Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, Rackham, OVPR, and the International Institute, the School of Music Theatre and Dance. The gamelan is owned by the Stearns Collection.
