The Low Anthem got started in Providence, Rhode Island in 2006 when two of its members met at Brown University's freeform station, WBRU. The members of this folk-rock trio have backgrounds ranging from rock to Americana to classical music, and their instrumental forces are similarly diverse, including acoustic and electric guitars and basses, banjo, clarinet, violin, mandolin, harmonica, keyboards, horns, zither, a Tibetan singing bowl, an impressive variety of percussion including an oil drum, and, on occasion, a cell phone. They match up these sounds to folk and blues roots music in totally unexpected ways.
The Low Anthem's album "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin" got them signed to the influential Nonesuch label, and last year they appeared at Bonnaroo, the Newport Folk Festival, and Britain's Glastonbury Festival, and they're coming to Michigan with a brand-new release. The Low Anthem were on the bill with the Avett Brothers at the Michigan Theater on March 9, and now they're back for a solo show of their own.
Nathaniel Ratliff opens this evening's show.
