There is something attractive and inspiring about lighthouses. Perhaps their mystery is tied in part to their nocturnal nature. We encounter them most authentically at the end of our days when they are stirring to embrace their night’s work, or, more rarely, when we rise long before habit and seek them out at the end of their labor in advance of the rising sun.
Steven Huyser-Honig thinks that their inspiration draws more from a ghostly echo of the men and women who once served in these isolated outposts. Though the last lighthouse keeper may have served decades ago, the lighthouses seem still animated by their spirit of dedication, integrity and service. Lighthouses are symbols of strength in the face of adversity and a reminder of our own better nature.
