If you want to put a small vegetable garden in your yard today, it can be done. Let’s say your ground is prepared and you are ready to go-- all you need is some plants. You could spend a leisurely Saturday wandering around various garden centers or the Farmers’ Market, but maybe you’ve got a sizable list of things to do, and getting the garden in the ground is just one of them.

Here is our strategy for an almost instant garden.

County Farm Park's Britton Woods is a native plant must-see http://annarbor.com/home-garden/county-farm-parks-britton-woods-is-a-native-plant-must-see/
trillium grandiflorum-white and pink-cfp.JPG

Both the same species, the Large Flowered Trillium's brilliant white slowly changes to pink as it gets older. Which of these flowers is older?

Quick! Move fast! This warm weather is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing for obvious reasons, wearing shorts without getting goose pimples is one. It’s a curse because our wonderful spring ephemerals display their beauty for a much shorter period of time.

Given that, I have a suggestion for you that you should follow if at all possible, especially if you live in Ann Arbor, and it’s this. Visit the Washtenaw County Farm Park’s Britton Woods in the next few days.

Ann Arbor Orchid Festival to highlight one of nature's most amazing flowers http://annarbor.com/entertainment/ann-arbor-orchid-festival-to-highlight-one-of-natures-most-amazing-flowers/ The incredible orchid. It's beautiful, fragile and a wonder of evolution. Anyone who has seen "Adaptation," knows they have changed to make pollination easier, whether it be by mimicking bees or shooting pollen at passing insects. Celebrate these amazing flowers at the Ann Arbor Orchid Festival at Matthaei Botanical Gardens this weekend.

The life of a dead tree - plant 'bones' shelter animals, improve ground water even after death http://annarbor.com/home-garden/the-life-of-a-dead-tree/

Lefurge Woods, a preserve of the Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy, is a beautiful, mature woods that has fallen trees, and some pit and mound topography, as shown here. Try to visit it - you'll be glad you did.

Native or not, a living tree is a pretty thing to see, and the shade that trees provide is a welcome relief on a hot day, and necessary for some plants to survive. Living trees also soften the views of concrete streets and buildings and many deciduous trees add delightful colors in autumn, and fascinating, long shadows in winter.

And, once a tree dies, especially a showy maple, a stately oak, or a towering elm, we mourn its passing. The thing is, ecologically speaking, a good chunk of that stately oak’s work has yet to be done when it has breathed its last “breath.”

To me, when daylight savings time kicks in and the local Dairy Queens open, Michigan spring begins, so Happy Spring everyone!

Since our springs are typically random weather crap-shoots as to what a particular day will bring, our native trees and shrubs are typically smart enough to keep their leaves huddled in their buds until April or May when the days are much longer. As such, we still have time to enjoy the skeletons of winter, and enjoy some of the shapes presented by our native trees and shrubs. So, in a category format, let’s take a look at some of the shapes and features that will be covered with leaves in a couple of months.

Gateway gardens: Are you in danger? We want to know! http://annarbor.com/home-garden/new-gardeners-encouragement-tips-advice-knowledge/
Pea Seeds.jpg

Are you or is someone you love at risk because of a Gateway Garden?

Maybe you tried gardening for the first time last year, and now you just have to go back for more. You find yourself lingering around every seed display, and you are sneaking more and more of those brightly colored packages into the house. Although the ground is still frozen, you are already making notes and plans about which plants are going where and possibly toying with the idea of perennials.

Or maybe your “friend” started with just a couple tomato plants, and everyone thought “that’s no big deal.” But now, he or she is anxious for the snow to melt and keeps talking about getting his or her “hands dirty again.” Maybe he or she is hanging with a new crowd, which includes the man down the block who grows roses or that helpful woman at the garden center. Perhaps your friend is even talking about starting a compost pile!

These are just some of the possible signs of a Gateway Gardener.

Worst Valentine's Day gifts: Don't do it! http://annarbor.com/home-garden/worst-valentines-day-gifts/

“You shouldn’t have. You really shouldn’t have.”

Not exactly what you want to hear when he opens your Valentine’s Day gift… And yes, it is possible to give such a bad gift that giving nothing would be an improvement.

For my research into this delicate subject, I consulted... what else? The Internet!

What I found both surprised and disturbed me. Read on!

How much space counts as a garden? http://annarbor.com/home-garden/how-much-space-size-makes-a-garden/
Potted Basil.jpg

A story on NPR in January focused on a study of urban gardening in Chicago the purpose of which was to discover the amount of space being used for growing food. The researchers tried to verify the community garden projects from compiled lists and found them inaccurate and not comprehensive. They turned to Google Earth to examine satellite imagery of the city and, over a period of eight months, found 4,648 sites of food production or a total of 65 acres. They counted everything — backyard gardens, vacant lot gardens, rows of plants.
