Anatomy Made Easy: What is the core?

I am preparing to head out for a training this weekend, so this week's post will be short. As a Gyrotonic & Pilates instructor I hear about "the core" all the time. It is a popular buzzword in the media right now, and many people come to me telling me that they need a stronger core.

So this week I want to know: What do YOU think the core is? And why do you think it might be important? Leave me a note in the comments section! Let me say right now that there isn't one correct answer to this question. I will share my opinions about what the core is next week, but it will help me to craft my post if I know what your current perceptions are.

While you are at it, check out my post from last week about exercises you can do at your desk -- it has generated discussion about ideal "sitting" positions while working at a desk. Feel free to weigh in!

The core, to me, are the muscles, tendons & ligaments connecting the various parts of the mid-section of the body (about hip to chest?), enabling the body to stay upright, bend, twist, etc. The core is 360 degrees - goes all the way around the body; front, back & sides.?? Just mom..... in arkansas! :-)
