Baby it's cold outside! Tips for keeping active on frigid winter days

By Melissa Gerharter MS, RD

You have good intentions of going outside for a run, so you lace throw on your warmest fleece, dig out your hat and gloves, lace up your shoes, step outside. How nice is it to be smacked in the face with a gust of frigid wind? Instead of taking one step back inside and checking your sanity, follow these tips for safely working out in Michigan's winter climate.

Layer up. First, start with a thin layer of material that will draw sweat away from your body, and then add a layer of fleece for warmth. On top of those layer a breathable, waterproof outer layer. Layering means when you get get warm, you can take layers off and then add them back on once you get chilled.

Cover them up! Your hands, feet and ears, that is. A headband or breathable hat works well, as do thermal socks and layering your hands.

Check the temperature. Be safe — if it is below 0 degrees Farehenheit or the wind chill is extreme, exercise indoors.

Don't be left out in the dark. The days are shorter, so make sure you wear reflective clothing if you are exercising in the dark so that drivers can see you.

Drink up! You need fluids even when it is cold, so remember to drink before, during and after your workout.

Use the buddy system. If you can't exercise with a buddy, make sure you let someone know your route and when you plan on returning in case something does go wrong.

Don't let the cold air scare you from being outside in the winter. It can be invigorating and energizing to get outside and move. Just be safe and smart!
