Cigarette warning labels could get a graphic makeover

By Juliana Keeping

Cigarette warning labels could be getting a makeover.

A rule change proposed by the FDA last week could mean cigarette packages will have to be wrapped in big, colorful cigarette warning labels involving messages of death, cancer and various other consequences of smoking.

Kind of like this:

Cigarette warning labels could get a lot more graphic as soon as September 2012, under new regulations proposed by the FDA on Nov. 12, 2010.

The FDA will make its final decision on the proposed new warning labels on June 22, 2011. The FDA is seeking public comment on the proposed rule through Tuesday, January 11, 2011. New labels could appear as early as the fall of 2012.

And the agency wants your feedback. Here’s how to tell the FDA what you think of the images:

To submit an official comment during this time period:

• Go to www.regulations.gov and insert docket number FDA-2010-N-0568 into the “search” box and follow the prompts. • Send a fax, with your comments, to 301-827-6870. • The address for mail, hand and courier deliveries (for paper, disk, or CD-ROM submissions) is Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, MD 20852. All comments should be identified by Docket ID No. FDA-2010-N-0568. It is only necessary to send one set of comments.

i think this is a great idea, because apparently many people AREN'T aware of the dangers of smoking...i don't understand why anyone still smokes, so maybe this will finally reach those people that are completely ignorant to all the other warnings they are given

I think they should just put a picture of a black lung on the packs.

Isn't this a bit much? I mean, I don't think many people are unaware of the dangers of smoking anymore.
